The UK government has implemented new SPAM legislation based on EU guidelines. The rules are clear, companies need to get

permission from people before sending them emails or text messages. An opt out option also needs to be included in all e-mail to allow users to remove themselves from mailing lists.

Since 11/12/2003, anyone who receives unsolicited emails or text messages from companies or individuals can sue them for compensation. E-commerce minister Stephen Timms, said: "Breach of enforcement orders issued by the Information Commissioner is a criminal offence liable to a fine of up to £5,000 in a magistrate's court, or an unlimited fine if the trial is before jury."

In our eyes this is good news, as we are ourselves sick to the back teeth of unsolicited e-mail, and with estimates that spam represents 70% of all Internet e-mail it is a very serious problem.
