A year-long study by the Disability Rights Commission
(DRC) has found that 81% of public web sites in the
UK fail to meet the minimum standards for disabled
web users. Many everyday online activities such as
shopping, managing bank accounts or booking holidays
are difficult or even impossible for many disabled
web users, according to the report.
The DRC tested a thousand UK web sites using automated
software and one hundred web sites were subjected
to detailed user testing, including e-commerce, business,
government, leisure and search engine sites.
The worst affected disabled group were those with
visual impairments, with many blind people unable
to perform the tasks given to them.
Web accessibility guidelines are constantly reviewed
and all businesses have a social responsibility as
well as a legal duty to ensure that disabled people
can use their web sites. If you would like to learn
